ORGANIC KIDS

Kids nowadays are going green -- and not just because it's St. Patrick's Day. As the trend toward organic products continues, children are an ever-growing market for eco-friendly companies.

From vegetarian hemp children's shoes (kidbean.com) and organic toothbrushes for toddlers (recycline.com) to celebrities like Courteney Cox and Gwen Stefani slathering their babies in organic lotions (thymes.com and natures-gate.com), today's babies seem to be on the right track to grow into socially responsible adults.

Take New York-based Gabrielle Kahn-Chiossone, who founded Farmerkids.com, which specializes in 100-per-cent organic cotton T-shirts for babies and toddlers featuring cute pictures of farm animals. There's even a shirt reading, "Organic kid."

"There's so much eco-talk these days," which is great, says the 43-year-old mother of two, adding she "would love to see more people putting their children into organic clothing every day and not just to think it's something for special occasions."

Though many people have jumped on the organic-food bandwagon, Kahn-Chiossone says there's still room for awareness about organic clothing.

"It's not quite there. I still have to explain to many people what organic cotton is. And if I walk into a fabric store and ask if they have organic cotton, they look at me sometimes with a funny face and big question mark," she says.

The busy mother says she's trying to make sure her own kids understand the growing green trend.

"My six-year-old understands about organic food. And I've explained to her why I like her to wear clothes without chemicals. She understands why I'd rather she carry an organic backpack and have eco-friendly lunch bags. She still asks for vinyl princess backpacks, but I try to gear her away from that," she says.

Babies' skin, she explains, is so sensitive it makes sense to put them in the most natural products.

Even mainstream stores are joining the trend. Cotton Ginny will have an eco-friendly baby line in 104 of its stores across the country this spring. "We have a new president and his vision is to be able to do business, make a profit and be kind to the earth," says Laurie Dubrovac, the company's director of marketing and communications. The line contains "affordable organic cotton, and you wouldn't think those two words, 'organic' and 'affordable' would go together," she adds. The store will feature both a boys' and girls' line, with sleepers going for $12 and bibs for $5.

"It's great for babies' skin and limiting impact on earth," Dubrovac says.

On the home front, Babynaturopathics.com, a Canadian website, launched earlier this year. It features organic clothes, blankets and Asian-inspired kimonos for toddlers. Soon, even organic toys will be available.

With this trend on the grow, who knows? Your baby's first words may not be "mommy" but "Mother Earth."
